Known for his sledge hammer batting, the 32 year old right handed batsman made his domestic debut in the year1999-2000. His stellar performance during the under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy matches saw his stardom climb to the heights of the Baroda under-19 and West Zone Under-19 teams. Having made his Ranji Debut in 2001-02 season, he was Baroda’s fourth highest scorer and third highest wicket taker by the year 2004-2005.
Yusuf was part of the Indian team at the inaugural ICC T -20 World Cup 2007 that was held in South Africa. His Twenty20 International debut came in the form of scoring the opening 15 runs with one of them being an out of space sixer against Pakistan in the final.
His consistent performance during the IPL secured him a position in the Indian One Day Team.He then became a regular feature in the Indian team. Along the way, he was also selected to play for many International Cups as a part of the Indian Team. He impressed many during the England ODIseries. Scoring a fifty off just 29 balls during the second ODI, it was a very happy Birthday for the player who turned 26 that day.
During the finals of the Duleep Trophy cricket tournament in 2010, Pathan led his team West Zone to a win over South Zone with a hundred in the first innings and a double hundred in the second. This earned his team the record of highest successful run chase in cricket history.With that amazing win came many more. On the 7th of December, Yusuf led India to a 5 wicket win with an aggressive beat down of 123 runs from 96 balls against New Zealand. Sharing an unbroken 133 partnership with Saurabh Tiwary and landing a target of 316, he was awarded the man of the match. He received praises galore for this spectacular performance which is still talked about today.
During the MTN ODI series against South Africa he gave an outstanding performance by scoring 105 from 70 balls. Having scored a century off 68 balls, he is the sixth fastest Indianplayer to do so and second fastest by an Indian outside the subcontinent.
Yusuf was an integral part of Team India in the historic 10th ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. India were declared the World Cup winners, its second World Cup victory, having previously won in 1983
After a good season in 2007-08, he was signed for USD 475,000 by the Rajasthan Royals. He scored 435 and took 8 wickets during the inaugural 2008 IPL season and recorded the fastest half century against Deccan Charges. Yusuf also scored the fastest IPL century in just 37 balls against the Mumbai Indians in 2010.
He became the Vice Captain of the Rajasthan Royals during the third edition of the IPL and was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for USD 2.1 million during the 2011 IPL auction. A very well invested amount considering that they ended up winning the IPL twice with Yusuf’s fastest 50 in IPL history in a mere 15 balls in 2014 IPL season.
